A Lesson In Cuddlies

All my kids have had cuddlies.  They each chose their own cuddly.  For a period of time they’d have a few different animals or blankies they’d be drawn to, but eventually they would end up with one special cuddly.  I LOVED that my kids had cuddlies because once a cuddly was chosen, they did a marvelous job of falling asleep on their own.  And if they woke during the night, often the cuddly would help them get back to sleep.

LaLa

My oldest son chose this bunny.  It was actually a gift that my great-grandmother had given to my baby sister.  When I married, my sister was only 9 years old and she let me take this bunny to remind me of her.  LaLa liked to hold one of the long ears and suck his thumb.

When LaLa was around 3, he was staying at his grandparents house and he lost his bunny.  They searched their house high and low and never could find it.   About a week earlier one of the ears had fallen off, and I hadn’t had a chance to sew it back on.  I gave it to him and for like a year he went around with this yucky, ratty, hairless ear, sucking his thumb.

Little MissLittle Miss had a blanket for her cuddly.  When I had her, we lived in a townhouse and one of our neighbors made this for her.  It actually was very scratchy, I don’t know why she took to this one.

When she was just over 2, we were at the mall and she fell asleep on my shoulder holding her blankie.  I didn’t realize that she let go of it until we were in the car.  The mall was closing, but I ran though as much of it as I could trying to find her blankie.  I called the next day and no one had turned it in.  I’m sure whoever found it thought it was some yucky rag.

Nolie had a blankie too.  He called it “blue-one blankie.”  This was a blanket that I had knitted for him when I was pregnant.  He liked to pull the strings on it while sucking his thumb, so eventually “blue-one blankie” became a strangulation hazard.  It was replaced with three “white-one blankies” and eventually Nolie settled on one of those which he still carries around.

Little CamCam has a blue blankie.  It was a gift from a friend of mine, actually it was for Nolie.  CamCam is my only one who doesn’t really carry his cuddly around during the day.  Once in awhile he’ll go grab it, but mostly he just uses it when it’s bedtime.

Little Hurricane chose a bunny.  When I was pregnant with him, I was at the Gap and Little Miss picked out this bunny.  I didn’t want to get it because we have SO many stuffed animals, but she convinced me because it was so soft.

He liked to suck his thumb, and then put the bunny in the crook of his arm while holding the hair in the back of his head.  Very complicated cuddler.

This bunny was ALWAYS with him.  He called it his “beee”.

Last week we were at the mall, and I gave him his bunny.  At some point he must have thrown it, because when we got to the car I realized it was gone.  The mall had just closed, but I ran though everywhere we had been to try and find it.  I banged on the doors of 2 closed stores we had been in, only one let me in. (I hate you Sears!)  I called for 2 days, but noone had it.

Fortunately I knew the brand and size of his bunny.  I’ve been through losing cuddlies before, and so I had looked into getting a backup for him months ago.  But I never bought it.  So onto Amazon I go, when what do I see?

NOT IN STOCK
availibility:  unknown

You’ve got to be freakin kidding me.  I did a massive internet search, and found only one site carrying the bunny in the correct size.  Or, I could buy the same bunny, 3” larger from Amazon for half the price.

Now, if you have a child who looses a cuddly, and you are actually fortunate enough to have a chance at replacing said cuddly with an exact replica, TAKE IT!

Not me though, I bought the larger/cheaper one.  I didn’t think 3 inches was that big of a deal.  It took 6 days, and hIMG_2274is bunny finally came.  The week had been hell, and I was so excited when it arrived.  Little Hurricane opened the package and when he pulled off the tissue paper said “my beee!”  He pulled it out, sucked his thumb, and tried to put the bunny in the crook of his arm.  It was too big!

He took that bunny, stuffed it back in the box, put the tissue paper on top, and handed it to me.

Try again mom.

I’ve been trying to force this thing on him yesterday and today, and I think he’s finally starting to accept him.

I just hope his old bunny isn’t “toy story 3-ing” his way back home, only to find out he’s been replaced.

  1. This is so sweet! I remember the stuffed pup I had when I was a kid. I left it in a shopping cart once, and we actually found it when we went back. (I guess if I remember that it was either incredibly traumatizing or I was really too old to have it.)

  2. Awwwweee! So sweet. Evil never took to anything! She also doesn't sleep on her own or in her own bed.

  3. So cute!! Blake has a teddy that he just loves, but it turns out that it's now some sort of collectible! Sucks for me because Teddy is now $75. I'm pretty lucky, though, because Blake has several stuffed animals and "snuggles".

  4. Awwww... I was just thinking about this the other day. My 22 month old son does not have something like this. I'm not sure if he will. He has weeks when he's a great sleeper and then he has days when he's always waking up and wanting to sleep with us.

  5. My 1 year old has a stuffed fox that we picked out for her before she was born. He is aptly named, "Fox". She likes him, but she isn't particularly attached to him. I wonder if the attachment will come later, or if she's just not a lovey (cuddlie) type kid?

    Stopped by from SITS!

  6. Oh, it's so hard when they loose their lovey! Glad you were able to find some sort of replacement!

    It is missing an eye.

  9. I had a softie. My grandma would make me satin blankets I would rub my cheek with. I still get teased about rubbing my cheek and sucking my thumb.
My oldest has a thing for his binky. I'm hoping he'll attach to a blanket or stuffed animal so his teeth don't get ruined. So far, no luck.

  10. I just busted out laughing at your genius end. "I just hope his bunny isn't toy story-ing it home only to find he's been replaced." HA! That was awesome!

My kids both have "night nights" which are just blankies that I put in their bed with them from birth. They can NOT go to sleep without them. Max is a bit more attached to his than Maggie. I really fear the day that one disappears or they just are too worn out. However...my sister STILL sleeps with her "blankie" from childhood. It's a skosh threadbare. haha

  11. Aww my heart goes out to the ones who lost theirs.

For me I had a blanket we called "Silky". I can only assume this was because it had that silk edging. I kept that silky longer than most kids. I was about 13 actually. Anyways, when we went camping sometimes we would put our laundry in the wash and then hire the laundry-mat employees to transfer it to the dryer and then fold it. Well they must of thought that they ruined something and threw it away. I can't blame them really; it looked like lint holding hands. When I think about it I still get that overwhelming sad feeling(yup, 22 and still sad). So my heart really does go out to them! Though luckily mom saved a piece of it long before it got taken, so I understand "LaLa"'s carrying around of that bunny ear :)

  12. That bunny is so cute! My daughters never really attached to anything that they carried around with them. Em has a beanie babies ostrich (of all things)that must be in her bed at night but that's it. I hope your son enjoys his new bunny.

  13. Oh the anxiety that I just felt reading this post. My oldest still has his "blankelet" at the bottom of his bed and sleeps with mickey and bambi. I think he will have them until he goes to college. My littlest has the pooh that his brother used to have. There is no finding a replacement to any of these. We would just be (pardon my french) royally screwed. They are not allowed to leave the house unless we are on a car trip and then i live in fear.

  14. What great stories! I've actually been wondering how/when/if Astroboy will choose his lovie. Right now, he loves his Taggies blanket, but I think that's more because it's what I give him most than because it's what he loves. We'll see.

So glad Little Hurrican is starting to accept his new Bee! You'll have to let us know if "old" Bee shows up again!
